Poppy is a five year old female Harris Hawk. She was bred by club members Martyn and Kevin, and several of her siblings are flown by club members.

She was slow to finish the moult this year, but eager to put the off season behind her and set about the serious business of hunting.

Her first foray out was in early November, and though she had not reached peak fitness, she still took and held a cock pheasant in fine style.

Her second venture out was a club field meet, where she didn't fare so well...getting restless and impatient, and so we left the meet so as not to disturb others and ventured to her favourite woods, where she settled, but did not take anything for the bag on the day.

There had been some short exercise and general fitness flights from that day to today, and the time and effort paid off as Poppy took a hen  pheasant in excellent style..the typical Harris Hawk glide, followed by a powerful vertical stoop and a successful strike.

So far Poppy is enjoying her season, following on obediently and working smartly in the woods when cover is being beaten for her.

The season is still young, there are still several club meets as well as the days that Poppy and I will share over the coming winter, and if she continues as she is, it will be a great year!!

The links below are two clips of Poppy's success to date. Enjoy!

If anyone else wants to tell their hawk's story of the season so far, then please feel free to e-mail me with pics and your story, and I'll be happy to post it on the site!
