Marvin
is a long standing member of NRC, and is also the NRC treasurer, carefully
guarding the coffers!
Marvin's interest in birds of
prey was sparked when his wife presented him with an experience day at
Icarus Falconry as a gift. The experience was so enjoyable, Marvin then went
on to book a five day intensive course with Icarus Falconry at Holdenby
House, which led to him becoming a regular volunteer.
Before long, Marvin was
participating in shows and demonstrations, and learning as he went along.
Marvin went on to acquire his
first bird, a male Harris hawk, which he flew for two seasons.
Unfortunately, the bird suffered ill health in the form of lesions in his
legs, and so was retired to a breeding aviary.
Marvin then acquired a female
Harris from club breeders Martyn and Kevin, and named her Tara.
Tara flew well for three
seasons, but again unfortunately, she suffered wing tip oedema and had to be
euthanized.
Marvin has entered into a
breeding partnership with Mike Hewlett of Icarus Falconry, and currently
they have a pair of Peregrines. Their first year saw three eggs, with only
one hatching, a bird which was despatched to Dubai.
Marvin is currently without a
hunting bird, but has placed an order with Martyn and Kevin for another
female Harris.
Mia is Marvin's Bengal Eagle
Owl, and she is resident at Icarus where she regularly takes part in
experience days and demonstrations, which Marvin enjoys participating in.
When asked what his favourite
moments in falconry were, Marvin was thoughtful, but decided that it was the
chase, watching a hawk take after quarry with that familiar 50/50 chance of
success. Win or lose, it's always a joy to watch.
Marvin also recalled training
Tara to a whistle, and remembers the exhilaration when she began to respond.
As far as the future goes,
Marvin hopes to do more with falcons, but also wants to have more good
seasons with a hawk and to continue with the club for many years to come.
